Code Requirements for Emergency Radio Communication Enhancement Systems (ERCES)

Emergency Radio Communication Enhancement Systems (ERCES) are mandated by the International Building Code (IBC) and the International Fire Code (IFC) and are outlined in NFPA 1221 and NFPA 72.

NFPA 1221 (2016) Section 9.6 and NFPA 72 (2013, 2010) Section 24.5.2 require radio coverage with 99% coverage in critical areas and 90% coverage in general building spaces to ensure reliable emergency communications.

IFC Section 510 (2015, 2012) states that all new and existing buildings must provide approved emergency responder radio coverage based on the existing signal strength in the area.

Many local jurisdictions have their own requirements for BDA (Bi-Directional Amplifier) systems. The Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) determines the final specifications, making their requirements the most critical to meet.

Additionally, FCC regulations apply to all RF-emitting devices, including BDAs. To be legally sold and installed in the U.S., all BDAs must be FCC-certified, and systems must comply with applicable FCC rules and regulations.
